NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte recently described a Russian drone attack near the Polish border as an act of ‘desperation.’ The assault targeted a Ukrainian passenger train. Mr. Rutte believes Russian President Vladimir Putin is mistaken if he thinks such actions will deter support for Ukraine.

Putin, Rutte indicated, aims to undermine allied unity. However, this strategy will fail, he asserted during a press conference in Brussels. Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa joined him at NATO headquarters.

The drone strike on Sunday hit a Ukrainian train close to the Polish frontier. Notably, a different convoy carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other senior European officials had used the same line shortly before. Rutte suggested the attack’s proximity to NATO territory shows Putin’s desire to sow fear.

Russia continues its brutal war of aggression against Ukraine, Rutte stated. This conflict comes at an ‘astronomical cost’ to Russia itself. The country reportedly suffers over 40,000 casualties each month.

Moscow is clearly struggling, he explained. Consequently, it resorts to reckless and dangerous attacks. These include strikes against civilian infrastructure, even close to NATO member territory.

NATO allies will respond by increasing aid to Ukraine. They will ensure Ukraine has necessary defenses, Rutte affirmed. Moreover, NATO’s commitment to collective defense remains steadfast.

We will always protect ‘every inch’ of allied territory, he stressed. This pledge underscores the alliance’s resolve. Furthermore, NATO addresses Russia’s hybrid warfare.

NATO possesses all necessary response options for hybrid threats. Some actions are public, others remain undisclosed. This ensures effective countermeasures without revealing all details.

Separately, Rutte addressed Slovenia’s defense spending with PM Jansa. He acknowledged a current ‘problem’ in meeting targets. However, Slovenia has pledged to invest 2% of its GDP.

The commitment also includes a credible path towards 3.5% by 2035. Rutte expressed confidence in Slovenia remaining a reliable ally. This highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen NATO’s capabilities.
